Greg Selinger was today elected leader of Manitoba's governing New Democratic Party in Manitoba

He will succeed Gary Doer as the province's premier, obtaining 1,317 votes from the 2,005 registered delegates at a party leadership convention in Winnipeg.

The following is Selinger's official biography

************************* Greg was first elected as MLA in the constituency of St. Boniface in 1999. He was re-elected in 2003 and 2007.

Greg was appointed minister of finance in 1999 and has served in this capacity for the last 10 years.

He has also served as minister responsible for French language services and the Civil Service Commission, minister responsible for the Crown Corporations Public Review and Accountability Act, minister responsible for Manitoba Hydro, the Manitoba Lotteries Corporation and the Manitoba Liquor Control Commission and minister responsible for the Public Utilities Board.

Greg received a PhD from the London School of Economics, a master’s degree in public administration from Queen’s University and a bachelor of social work degree from the University of Manitoba.

He was associate professor in the faculty of social work at the University of Manitoba.

He also represented St. Boniface as City councillor and chaired the city’s committee on finance and administration.

Greg has also served on numerous community boards including the board of the St. Boniface Hospital, the St. Boniface Museum, the Community Income Tax Service Boards and as president of the Old St. Boniface Residents Association.

His professional highlights include introducing 10 consecutive balance budgets for the Province of Manitoba, passing legislation to regulate the payday loan industry and playing a critical role in the development of the first wind turbine project in St Leon.

He and his wife Claudette Toupin have two sons.
