MINISTRY OF NATURAL RESOURCES

************************** Forest fire situation update - East Fire Region

There were six new fires reported in the East Fire Region on Thursday, September 17.

Sudbury 20 and 21 were each reported at 0.1 hectares in size and are listed as under control and out respectively.

Timmins 12 is 0.1 hectares and has been called out.

Algonquin Park 8 was reported at 0.2 hectares in size and has since been called out.

Bancroft 4 is 0.2 hectares and has been called out.

Pembroke 3 is under control at 0.1 hectares.

There are no issues anticipated with these fires.

The forest fire hazard in the East Fire Region is low to moderate with a pocket of high hazard in the central portion of the region.

The support effort was the largest and longest to another fire jurisdiction in the history of Aviation and Forest Fire Management Branch (AAFM).

Staff in BC ranged from over 600 at one time to the last group of 59.

Just over 1,000 staff from all parts of AFFM participated providing a total of 21,605 person days of support over a period of 67 days.

With hunting season upon us, hunters and campers are reminded to be FireSmart.

With cooler evenings and mornings, people are lighting campfires for warmth and cooking.

Once you are ready to leave the site, please ensure to properly extinguish your campfire, even if it seems damp - the ground dries out during the day and improperly extinguished campfires can re-ignite and turn into wildfires.
