**************************** Sault Ste. Marie architect’s laboratory design featured on Malaysian postage stamps

SAULT STE. MARIE - (August 19) - The Department of Chemistry in Malaysia celebrated its 100th anniversary with the release of two corporate government issued postage stamps that feature the laboratory designed and built by Sault Ste. Marie based architect David Ellis.

The Department of Chemistry started as a Government Analytical Laboratory for the Straits Settlement in Singapore in the year 1885 and formed its branch laboratory for Penang June 1, 1909.

In the year 1946, both these laboratories were merged with the Chemistry Laboratory of the Institute of medical Research (IMR) and together with the Chemical Trade and Customs Department.

The department then was known as the Department of Chemistry Federation of Malaya and Singapore with the third laboratory being located in Brickfields Road, Kuala Lumpur.

Following independence in 1957, the department gave way to two separate entities, the Chemistry Department of Singapore and the Department of Chemistry of Chemistry of the Federation of Malaya with its new headquarters being established in Petaling Jaya.

In 1963, the Department was renamed as the Department of Chemistry Malaysia.

The function and organization of the Department of Chemistry Malaysia was recommended in a ‘white paper’  No. 46 of the 1956 Federation of Malaya by a committee selected by Sir Donald Charles MacGillivary, the high commissioner of the Federation of Malaya.

It was suggested that the activities of the Department of Chemistry be divided into four sections consisting of forensics, health, customs and industry.

Today, the Department of Chemistry is one of 27 agencies under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation and has a network of 12 laboratories nationwide providing integrated and synergistic services, not only to government agencies but also to the private sector, and at the same time ensuring public safety, societal well-being and environment protection.

Congratulations to the Department of Chemistry Malaysia and David Eliis Architect Inc. - a strong partnership that has brought an international focus on Sault Ste. Marie, its businesses and people.
