In an announcement certain to draw fire from those who believe the Apollo moon landings were faked, NASA has today released new images, taken this month by its lunar reconnaissance orbiter spacecraft, showing five of the original six Apollo lunar landing sites.

The images clearly show the lunar module descent stages sitting on the moon's surface.

In the case of the Apollo 14 site (see above), even astronaut footprints are visible almost 40 years later.

NASA said today that the images released so far were taken before the reconnaissance orbiter reached final mapping orbit, so future images of the same sites will offer two to three times better resolution.

Meanwhile, next Monday will be the 40th anniversary of the first Apollo landing on the moon, and NASA has just released newly restored video of the original televised coverage of the first-ever moonwalk.

Portions of the restored video can be seen on this SooToday.com newsreel.
