Tories flipped flag contract to American-owned shell company

OTTAWA - All across Canada, MPs are handing out Canadian flags and pins to celebrate Canada Day, but few Canadians know that these parliamentary symbols are being made in China by a U.S.-owned shell company.

New Democrat Charlie Angus (Timmins - James Bay) says that despite claims by Heritage Minister James Moore that the company is Canadian-based, the real owner of 6768997 Canada Inc. is actually listed as being in Playa del Ray, California.

“On Canada Day we celebrate our pride in the Maple Leaf, how is it that the Conservative government allowed a shell company, with no corporate history, to walk away with half a million dollars worth of contracts to outsource production of the Maple Leaf flag pin to China?” said Angus.

Angus says what is even more disturbing is how quickly this numbered company was awarded a contract from the government of Canada.

In May 2007, 6768997 Canada Inc. was registered at an address belonging to a suburban townhouse outside of Montreal.

A mere two months later, the company scored the first of a series of contracts which are together worth over half a million dollars.

“What is going on at Public Works that this company could set up a shell address in a suburban street and then, in no time, score a contract with the government of Canada?” said Angus. “How does a Canadian company with Canadian employees and Canadian overhead compete against a competitor that simply sets up an address in a townhouse and flips the contracts over to China?”

Angus says the fact that the Conservatives are willing to flip contracts through shell companies to Chinese manufacturers is proof of where the Conservatives are coming from in terms of supporting Canadian business.

“This is a government that won’t even stand up for the symbol of the Canadian flag. How can we expect them to stand up for Canadian workers and business? I am calling on the Conservatives to stop hiding behind talking points. The government must ensure that the next order of flag pins is made in Canada.”
