Cambridge University physicist Stephen Hawking, one of the world's best-known scientists, has been rushed by ambulance to hospital, where he is reportedly "very ill."

Cambridge University says that Hawking has battled a chest infection in recent weeks.

He was taken to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, England.

In addition to his scholarly works, Hawking authored a global bestseller, A Brief History of Time.
