Tenaris Algoma Tubes is indefinitely reducing its hourly workforce by 57 effective next Monday, workers were advised today.

Also, on Friday March 20, local production will be suspended for an expected six-week shutdown with operations to resume in early May.

"During the shutdown, a crew of 15 will be retained to take care of essential services," said company spokesperson Chris Belsito. "We're not winterizing. We continue to be committed to Sault Ste. Marie and to Canada."

Belsito said the shutdown is necessary for the company to align production with demand.

"We continue to see a downturn in the market and a high level of imports," Belsito told SooToday.com. "We'll continue to monitor the situation and keep the system ready in case more orders come in."

Two hundred and eighty hourly employees will be left at Tenaris Algoma Tubes after the reduction on Monday.

Belsito says the company is continuing to use this period of lower production demands to train employees.

"We recognize the difficulty this causes our employees and the city of Sault Ste. Marie. But it is necessary to help keep us viable into the future," he said. "We are trying to minimize the impact of this on employees and the community."
