Sixteen very special students at Algoma University have a lot to say about Sault Ste. Marie.

Sixteen very special students at Algoma University have a lot to say about Sault Ste. Marie.

Here from Japan's Kyoto Sangyo University as part of a three-week immersion program, the students are enrolled in the Sault Program for English Language Learning (SPELL).

They're earning course credits while learning about life in a foreign land.

As part of the exchange program, one Algoma U student is currently studying in Japan with two more to follow this coming fall.

“The fact the Sault strongly supports Algoma University in its efforts to connect to the rest of the world makes our program strong, which adds a real richness to our campus and our city,” says Joanne Elvy, SPELL director.

Last Tuesday during their first English course, the Japanese students were asked to write about their impressions of Sault Ste. Marie.

The following is what they had to say.

Warning: broken English ahead.

I think Sault Ste. Marie is a very beautiful city. The view is great, It is a small city. But there are a lot of trees and snow. The air is fresh. I feel the sun and stars are very close to me. It is really big. It is very cold but there is beautiful white snow. When I see it, I can feel warm. There are not many high buildings, but the building has its own feature. It looks like western style. The people in Sault Ste. Marie are very kind. My home stay family is good for me. They make delicious food for me. The teacher is kind. They all say easy English for us, they want us to understand and teach us a lot of things. So I think Sault Ste. Marie is a good city and I like to live there. I think there are many differences between Sault Ste. Marie and Japanese city. Now I live in Kyoto. The Kyoto is an old city. The buildings are a little ancient style. But Sault Ste. Marie is a Western style city. The temperature is very different. Almost all Japanese cities are warm and there is not much snow, but Sault Ste. Marie is a cold city. There are many snows. I also think the people's lifestyle is very different such as the food, clothes, houses, cars and other things. But it is not very much different. I can live here without many questions.

Sault Ste. Marie is a beautiful city and it is very cold. There is a lot of snow and the snow is beautiful. There are a few buildings, so we can see very far. There are many buildings in my home city, so the sky of Sault Ste. Marie bigger than the sky of my home city. My home city has a lot of people but Sault Ste. Marie has a few people but there are a lot of cars. Many houses are very cute. My home city is noisier than Sault Ste. Marie. And people who live in Sault Ste. Marie are friendlier than people who live in my home city.

I think a row of houses and streets of Sault Ste Marie are very beautiful. It is not colder than I expect. Sault Ste Marie is countryside. I feel very nice. Because of people of Sault Ste Marie are very kind. Also there is a broad ground. So I can relax. And I think Sault Ste Marie is interesting because there are various races of people. I think buildings of Sault Ste Marie are very different from Japan. Also the nature of Sault Ste Marie is different from Japan. I think the people’s nature in Sault Ste Marie is open, but the nature of Japanese people is not so open.

Sault Ste. Marie is a very good city. There is a lot of wonderful nature. There is much snow and it is very cold. Sault Ste. Marie is comfortable but very cold. The city’s people are very kind. My town is Osaka in Japan. Osaka is not snowing. Osaka is sometimes a little snowing. Sault Ste. Marie is much snow. Many houses are very cute. I was surprised to see the underground room (basement). It is very interesting.

There is a lot of snow in this city. The view is beautiful. It is very cold, but I thought it was colder. Canada has large land, so each house is big, and they need the car for activity. I went to the bus terminal. There are many stores near the bus terminal, but there are not many convenience stores like Japan. Honestly, I feel a little inconvenience. Japan is not so cold like Sault Ste Marie. Japan is small. Some buildings in Japan are crowded. And there are crowds of people too. However, there is enough land here. So it is not crowded.

I think this city is very cold and very big city. There is a lot of snow and many streets are very wide. There are a lot of tall trees. I think this city is very close to the USA. My host family told me they often go to the USA to go shopping. I am very cold, but very fine. I am happy now because many people are very kind to me. There are a lot of tall buildings in Japan, but in Sault Ste. Marie, there are a lot of low buildings. It doesn’t snow in my hometown, but there is a lot of snow in this city. In Japan, there is a time table at the bus stop, but there is no time table at this bus stop.

I think this city is very beautiful. Snow is very great. The air is very clean and so I can see a lot of stars. In Japan I can see stars, but the air is dirty so the sky is not clear. There are a lot of snows in this city but Japan has not too much. I had heard Canada is very cold before I came here. But this city is colder than I thought. Canadians like animals very much. Almost every family has a pet. My host family has a dog and cat. I am surprised because their dog is very big. Canadians are more friendly than Japanese people. I think Japan had better follow Canada. Also, the road in this city is very wide. This road is strange to me because in Japan, we draw a white line to divide the road. And, the food is big. Certainly I will gain weight.

Sault Ste. Marie is very cold and there is a lot of snow. Outside is very cold, but inside is very warm. Food is very delicious. For example, Lasagna is delicious. I had never eaten Lasagna. And I can see many trees in this city. People in Sault Ste. Marie are very kind. My host parents are friendly. They say “I love you” to each other every day. My parents do not say "I love you" every day. And in Japan, many people use bicycles. When we go shopping, we usually use bicycles. In Sault Ste. Marie I have not seen bicycles yet. And In Japan, there are many cars in the road. Also there are about 13 thousand people in our university. So there are many buildings and sloping roads in our university. I can see a beautiful mountain view from our university. Algoma University is smaller than our university. Our country has many company buildings.

Sault Ste. Marie is beautiful and clean. There is a lot of snow. I have never seen a lot of snow like in Sault Ste. Marie. It is a blanket of snow. The ground of Sault Ste. Marie is always shining. Sault Ste. Marie is colder than Japan, but the houses are warmer. My house is very cold. People are very kind. They tell me many things. For example, how to get on the bus and when I should get off the bus. In Japan, the rivers are not frozen over. In Canada, the lake is frozen. In Japan, the streets are congested with cars and people.
