Believe it or not, organized Zombie Walks are spreading in epidemic proportions around the world.

Participants in these underground events dress in typical zombie garb and makeup, and are encouraged to stay in character as the bloodthirsty horde makes its way along a planned route which traditionally ends at a graveyard or shopping mall.

The very first non-commercial zombie walk was hosted by a Toronto horror movie buff in 2003.

It drew only six participants.

The annual event has continued to grow with a reported 1,100 zombies taking part in 2007.

Monroeville, a suburb of Pittsburgh, holds the official Guinness World Record for the largest zombie walk with just under 1,000 participants.

Yes, there's a Guinness World Record for that.

And if you're a horror movie fan and the name Monroeville sounds familiar, it should.

The Monroeville Mall was the setting of George Romero's cult classic Dawn of the Dead.

However, last night in Grand Rapids, Michigan, an estimated 4,000 zombies came out in search of brains for that city's first-ever zombie walk.

"It heavily exceeded my expectations," event organizer Rob Bliss told The Grand Rapids Press.

Initially hoping to beat Monroeville's official world record, Bliss soon decided that the cost and logistics that go along with getting certified by Guinness were just too much.

While Sault Ste. Marie's sad little Zombie Walk was a bit of a disappointment, with even the walk's planner not bothering to make an appearance, the four that did show up were gung-ho and raring to go.

Right up until the time they climbed onto the Whitespace Gallery roof and devoured the brain of a SooToday.com photographer.

That's okay, though.

She didn't use it much anyway.
