More than 4,700 area Catholics did a rousing spiritual version of The Wave this afternoon at the conclusion of a huge Mass of Unity hosted at the Steelback Centre by the Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board.

The first 11 images in the photo gallery below were taken by Jim Fitzpatrick from the school board.

The remainder were supplied by Bill Howe's students at St. Mary's College.

SooToday.com's own camera failed at today's event and we are grateful for all who supplied us with images to illustrate this article.

The following news release was issued by the school board.

Historic event at Steelback Centre

SAULT STE. MARIE - (May 9) - The Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board (H-SCDSB) held the largest religious service in the history of Sault Ste. Marie’s Steelback Centre on Friday May 9, 2008.

Over 4,700 students, staff and employees of the board converged on the downtown Sault Ste. Marie facility for a Mass of Unity to celebrate the H-SCDSB’s 10th anniversary.

All 25 schools in the Board were represented during the service with students and staff travelling south from Chapleau, Wawa and White River and east from our schools in Espanola, Massey, Elliot Lake and Blind River made the pilgrimage.

They joined their peers from our 14 elementary schools and the three secondary schools in Sault Ste. Marie to fill the Steelback Centre with joy and song.

Presiding over the hour long mass was Bishop Jean-Louis Plouffe.

The bishop encouraged the assembly to live like Jesus in all we do and be good Samaritans.

Bishop Plouffe was joined by priests from across the diocese.

Special guests included the Sisters of St. Joseph, board trustees and Catholic school council members.

The Aboriginal component of our community was represented prior to the mass with a presentation of traditional dance and drumming.

The Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board was formed in 1998.
