The body of an unidentified woman has been recovered about two miles west of the Mackinac Bridge.

The woman, who was pronounced dead at the U.S. Coast Guard station in St. Ignace, jumped 175 feet from the bridge's south tower just before 4 p.m. yesterday.

The Associated Press is reporting this morning that police tried to negotiate with the woman before she jumped.

The Mackinac Bridge is 50 years old this year.

Since it opened, more than a dozen people have died jumping from the bridge into the Straits of Mackinac.

This was the second jumping death there this year.
