************************* Algoma Steel to shut down No. 7 blast furnace for maintenance Algoma Steel Inc. plans to shut down its No. 7 blast furnace for maintenance on Friday, July 6.

The rebuild is expected to take approximately 25 to 30 days.

The actual shutdown process — technically known as "blowdown" - is scheduled to begin at 6 a.m. on July 6 and is expected to last approximately 16 hours.

The blowdown may result in some increased noise levels and although all precautionary measures will be taken, there is the potential for a slight increase in emissions in conjunction with the process.

The Ministry of the Environiiient has been notified of all preparations and procedures related to the shutdown.

The July outage is necessary in order to complete remediation work to the furnace lining and tap holes, maintaining its reliability and bridging its operating capability.

Operations will continue in the plate and strip mill using slabs from inventory.

The last major outage of No. 7 blast furnace was in 1995.

No. 7 blast furnace has a rated capacity of 2.5 million tons per annum.
