Algoma University College today presented its Distinguished Faculty Award Dr. Francis Guth, popular associate professor of history and philosophy.

Shown this afternoon with AUC Academic Dean Arthur Perlini, Guth was recognized at today's convocation ceremony for for exceptional faculty contribution.

The following is an edited excerpt from a university news release:

**************************** Dr. Francis Guth, who will retire from the faculty at the end of this month, has been teaching at Algoma U since 1971.

He served as acting principal of Algoma University College from 1973 to 1975; was a member of the board of governors from 1979 to 1989 and then again during the 1995-96 academic year; and has served on numerous university boards and committees during his tenure at Algoma U.

Guth is currently working on an institutional history of Algoma U. A pair of awards from the Algoma University College Alumni Council were also presented for the first time at the 2007 convocation. The Distinguished Alumni Award, recognizing an alumnus who has reached a pinnacle of personal and professional achievement in his or her chosen field, was awarded to Diane Marshall, Class of 1974. Well known in the community for her outstanding service and career with the Algoma District School Board, Marshall developed programs for special needs and gifted children.

She later became the administrator of special education with the ADSB and was the first female superintendent. She has and continues to be very active in the community serving with such organizations as the Rotary Club of Sault Ste. Marie, Christmas Cheer program, Sault Area Hospital Board, Canadian Cancer Society, United Way, Algoma University College Foundation, and Central United Church to name a few. Marshall was most recently recognized for her outstanding contributions to the community by receiving the City of Sault Ste. Marie 2006 Medal of Merit award. The Alumni Achievement Award, which acknowledges the professional, civic, and personal accomplishments of an alumnus who has graduated within the past 10 years, was presented to Jody Rebek, Class of 1997. Rebek is managing director of Destiny Sault Ste Marie, where she's responsible for strategy development – designing and establishing strategies and growth engines for Sault Ste. Marie. Prior to joining Destiny Sault Ste Marie, she was executive director of Communities Quality Improvement (CQI), where she worked to develop continuous quality improvement in Sault Ste. Marie and surrounding area businesses and organizations.

Rebek was awarded the 2003 Canada Graduate Scholarship. Rebek is also very active in the community serving on the Board of Directors of the Lake Superior Conservancy and Watershed Council, Sault Ste. Marie and Area Physician Recruitment and the Sault Ste Marie Best for Kids Committee.
