Woo hoo! Carolyn Harrington!

Algoma University College today presented its Algoma U Senate Award to long-time supporter Carolyn Harrington.

Shown this afternoon with AUC President Celia Ross, Harrington was recognized at today's convocation ceremony.

The following is an edited excerpt from a university news release:

************************* One of the founding members of the Algoma U Community Economic & Social Development (CESD) Advisory Committee, Harrington has been a part-time instructor in the geography, sociology, and CESD departments at Algoma U.

Her current work as a faculty advisor to CESD students has ensured that students have acquired the necessary practical skills essential for employment following graduation, while the community agencies in which they are placed benefit from the students’ knowledge and abilities. Harrington was also an original member of the aboriginal education committee, a local ad hoc group with representation from various indigenous groups and First Nations, which worked to address various education issues within the aboriginal community.

This committee's work led to the creation of aboriginal counselor positions at both Algoma U and Sault College, and the eventual creation of the native nursing assistant program at Sault College. Outside of education, Harrington has worked for over 20 years in community development within the urban Aboriginal community at the Indian Friendship Centre.

In her role there, she has helped found a number of organizations such as Neech-ke-wehn Homes, a nonprofit housing program which provides supportive housing to close to 200 families and about 50 senior citizens. ************************* Look who graduated today!
