City backs Algoma U's independence bid

The following resolution, asking the Province of Ontario to grant a charter to Algoma University College granting it independence from Laurentian University, was approved tonight by Sault Ste. Marie City Council.

Councillors also agreed to ask other nearby communities to lend support to AUC's bid for independence:

AUC President Celia Ross advised City councillors that granting indepedence to her institution won't have an adverse financial impact on either AUC or Laurentian University.

The school wishes to increase its enrolment to approximately 3,000 students.

"As one of the smaller universities in Canada, with a recognized expertise in liberal arts and sciences, its primarily undergraduate programs will incorporate an appreciation of the modem-day development and historical heritage of Anishinaabe and other indigenous peoples throughout its curriculum and services," Ross said.

Whereas Algoma University College is an important contributor to the economic, social and cultural life of Sault Ste. Marie and the Algoma Region; and

Whereas Algoma University College is preparing a request to the Ontario Government to change its status from an affiliate college of Laurentian University to an independent, degree-granting institution, to be called Algoma University;

Now therefore be it resolved that City Council supports and endorses the request to the Government of Ontario to create Algoma University by granting a provincial university charter to Algoma University College as soon as possible.
