Constable Sonny Spina of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service stopped Natalie Deschene at around 11:30 p.m. last night.

Natalie wasn't in any trouble with law, though.

In fact the teenager thanked the friendly constable for checking her jacket as she and several hundred other teenagers were entering the United Way's 5th Annual Starlight Film Fest late last night at the Galaxy Cinema.

The personable Constable Spina was checking purses and bags as a precaution before the all-night event, thanking the teens for coming and wishing them all a fun night at the fundraiser.

He was assisted by Senior Constable Bruno Chiarot of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).

"We want to provide the kids with a safe environment to enjoy themselves," Constable Chiarot said.

Spina agreed: "The kids can enjoy themselves more when they don't have to worry about their personal safety."

He's volunteered at several of these events and he seldom encounters any problems with the teens.

"It's always a great group of kids," he said. "They're here to have fun and raise money for a good cause."
