Laurentian University announces its sixth PhD program, and first in social sciences and humanities

Sudbury (Ontario) - Laurentian University is pleased to announce that the Ontario Council of Graduate Studies has approved a sixth PhD program.

The PhD in Human Studies will be offered in French and in English as of January 2007.

It will build upon the existing and emerging research and teaching strengths of professors from the Faculties of Social Sciences and Humanities, and will work in close collaboration with northeastern Ontario communities and organizations.

"Already, and without the program even being announced, close to 20 candidates have communicated their intention to apply for admission to the interdisciplinary PhD in Human Studies, and the majority are from the region," says Simon Laflamme, sociologist and director of the new PhD program.

"There is not only a strong demand for graduate studies in northeastern Ontario, but also a desire to better understand, through linking and crossing disciplines, our human and collective realities," he said.

The PhD in Human Studies has a strong interdisciplinary orientation.

Its main field is human development.

The PhD candidates will be in constant interaction with professors specializing in the fields of cognition and communication, Franco-Ontarian and Francophone studies, interpretation, values and ethics, regional and cultural studies, and gender relations and sexuality studies.

"Laurentian University has a regional mandate, and is committed to playing a leadership role in northeastern Ontario's economic, political, social and cultural development," says Judith Woodsworth, president of Laurentian University.

"Since 2003, we have created six unique PhD programs, each building on acknowledged strengths and meeting northern and rural needs," she said.

"The university is proud to welcome its sixth PhD, our first in Social Sciences and Humanities."

During their doctoral years, students will have the opportunity to participate in research placements and complete field work in various public and private organizations established throughout the region.

They will be called upon to study the issues, problems and challenges facing communities from an interdisciplinary perspective.

As well as building on the strengths of the two Faculties of Social Sciences and Humanities, the PhD in Human Studies will greatly benefit from Laurentian University's established research centres, including the Institute of Northern Ontario Research and Development (INORD), l'Institut franco-ontarien (IFO), the Centre for Research in Human Development (CRHD), and the Centre for Rural and Northern Health Research (CRaNHR).

L'Université Laurentienne annonce son 6e doctorat et ouvre ses portes aux études de troisième cycle en sciences sociales et en humanités

Sudbury (Ontario) - L'Université Laurentienne est heureuse d'annoncer que le Conseil des études supérieures de l'Ontario a approuvé un 6e programme de doctorat.

Offert en français et en anglais dès janvier 2007, le doctorat ès sciences humaines s'appuiera sur les forces en enseignement et en recherche des professeurs des deux facultés des humanités et des sciences sociales de l'Université Laurentienne et il évoluera en étroite collaboration avec les communautés et organismes du nord-est ontarien.

« Sans que le programme soit annoncé, près de 20 candidates et candidats ont demandé à être admis au doctorat interdisciplinaire en sciences humaines, et la majorité d’entre eux proviennent de la région, affirme Simon Laflamme, sociologue et directeur du nouveau programme de troisième cycle.

Il y a non seulement un besoin d’accéder aux études supérieures dans le nord-est de l’Ontario, mais aussi un désir de comprendre, à travers et entre les disciplines, nos réalités humaines et nos collectivités.»

Le doctorat ès sciences humaines a une nette orientation en interdisciplinarité.

Il a pour champ le développement humain.

Les doctorants y côtoieront des professeurs qui évoluent en cognition et communication, en études franco-ontariennes et francophones, en interprétation, valeurs et éthique, en études régionales et en études des rapports homme-femme et de la sexualité.

« L'Université Laurentienne vise continuellement à se démarquer comme étant un contributeur de premier plan dans l'essor économique, politique, social et culturel de la région, affirme Mme Judith Woodsworth.

Depuis 2003, nous avons créé six programmes de doctorat uniques, à l’image des besoins du nord et des régions périphériques.

L'Université est fière d’accueillir ce 6e programme de doctorat, notre premier en humanités et sciences sociales. »

Lors de leur formation, les doctorants pourront effectuer des stages de recherche sur le terrain, dans divers organismes publics ou privés de la région.

Les étudiants de troisième cycle seront appelés, tout au long de leurs études, à aborder les questions, problèmes et défis qui se posent dans nos communautés en terme d'interdisciplinarité.

En plus de réunir les expertises des facultés des humanités et sciences sociales, le doctorat en sciences humaines profitera des Centres de recherche établis à l'Université, dont L'Institut nord-ontarien de recherche et de développement (INORD), l'Institut franco-ontarien (IFO), le Centre de recherche en développement humain (CRDH) et le Centre de recherche en santé dans les milieux ruraux et du nord (CRSMRN).
