Officials of the Ontario Ministry of Transportation and Laidlaw Transit Inc. are trying to determine why a wheel fell off a school bus delivering students from Bawating Collegiate and Vocational Institute.

The accident happened late last week in the north part of Sault Ste. Marie, according to Ray DeRosario, director of education with the Algoma District School Board.

DeRosario told SooToday.com that no one was hurt when the rear wheel came off.

Students were transferred to another bus, and parents were called.

The bus was towed by Laidlaw Transit to its compound and transportation ministry officials were notified, DeRosario said.

An investigation is underway to determine why the accident occurred and whether action is needed to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future, he said.

Laidlaw is the largest of 14 independent contractors employed by the school board to transport students.
