NEWS RELEASE LAURENTIAN UNIVERSITY

*************************** Granddaddy of Canadian rock and roll to receive an honorary doctorate from Laurentian University

Laurentian University will award an Honorary Doctorate of Letters to Mr. Ronnie Hawkins on Friday, June 3, at 10 a.m., during one of its six spring Convocation Ceremonies to be held in Laurentian's Fraser Auditorium.

Mr. Hawkins will not address the graduating class.

Instead, a ten-minute tribute video, containing a mix of old footage and taped messages from well-known personalities such as former U.S. President Bill Clinton, Kris Kristofferson, the late John Lennon, Robbie Robertson and David Foster, will be played.

Known as "The Hawk," "Mr. Dynamo" or "the Granddaddy of Canadian rock and roll," Ronnie Hawkins is an actor and musician.

Born in the United States, where he first launched his singing career, he is considered one of the pioneers of rock and roll.

In 1958, he toured with his band in Canada and broke club records everywhere.

He has been living in Ontario ever since and has made frequent appearances in the north.

Ronnie Hawkins is an icon in the music industry nationally and internationally.

In the early days of his career, he helped launch the musical careers of many Canadian musicians such as Robbie Robertson, David Foster, Burton Cummings, and David Clayton Thomas.

He has played for every Canadian Prime Minister since John Diefenbaker and regularly performed for Bill Clinton when he was President of the United States.

Mr. Hawkins has earned numerous awards: a Juno for Country Male vocalist in 1984, a Juno nomination in 1996, and the Walt Grealis Special Lifetime Achievement Award as the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences Industry Builder in 1996.

In 2003, he was inducted into the Canadian Music Industry Hall of Fame.

In sharing his personal battle with cancer, he has raised awareness of the disease across Canada.

Mr. Hawkins and his wife Wanda also raise money for research on behalf of the Schizophrenia Society of Ontario.

Four other distinguished citizens will also be awarded honourary degrees by the University.

They are Dr. John Gammon (Doctor of Laws, Thursday, June 2, 2:30 p.m.); Roy MacGregor (Doctor of Letters, Friday, June 3, 2:30 p.m.); Gisèle Lalonde (Doctor of Laws, Saturday, June 4, 10 a.m.); and Michael Atkins (Doctor of Letters, Saturday, June 4, 2:30 p.m.).

During the convocation ceremonies, Laurentian will also celebrate its 1,144 new graduates.

En 2003, il a été intronisé au Temple de la renommée de l'industrie canadienne de la musique.
