Latest unemployment picture for the Sault

Numbers released by Stats Canada Friday show the unemployment rate in Sault Ste. Marie for the month of September 2015 was at 11.3 percent, compared to 6.7 percent in September 2014. The September 2015 figure is lower than the 12.

Numbers released by Stats Canada Friday show the unemployment rate in Sault Ste. Marie for the month of September 2015 was at 11.3 percent, compared to 6.7 percent in September 2014.

The September 2015 figure is lower than the 12.2 percent unemployment rate figure for August 2015, but Stats Canada warns against comparing month-to-month figures with unadjusted data.

According to the stats released, approximately 4,200 people were unemployed in Sault Ste. Marie in September 2015.

According to the numbers, 7,500 fewer people were employed in the Sault last month compared to September 2014.

The employment rate for Sault Ste. Marie for September 2015 is at 48.8 percent, compared to a 59.4 percent employment rate in September 2014.

By comparison, the unemployment rate was at 5.2 percent in North Bay in September 2015, compared to 10.9 percent in September 2014, with 1,600 unemployed in September 2015.

Unemployment in Timmins for September 2015 is at 7.1 percent with 1,900 unemployed (figures from September 2014 are unavailable).
