Local Jays fans try to put the Sault on the map

As the Toronto Blue Jays take the field later today for their first playoff game in 22 years, a local special education class is trying to get Sault Ste. Marie on the map as part of the team’s social media campaign.

Marnee Guiliani’s special eduction class at Superior Heights decorated one of their windows with Blue Jays logos and Tweeted a photo of it to the team's Twitter account with the hashtag #cometogether.

A map on the Blue Jays’ website shows a map where people have Tweeted from in support of the team.

“We’re trying to get Sault Ste. Marie on the map. It’s not there yet but we will hound them throughout the day,” said Guiliani.

The special education program has used sports in the past to instil skills like math or world knowledge in the students.

“Because a lot of the students have different intellectual delays and needs, for us it’s more about what is going on in the world around us,” said Guiliani.

It also helps with social skills when the students are in the community and can carry on a conversation about the team.

“It gives them knowledge so if they are in the community and hear someone saying ‘oh the Blue Jays…” at least they have an idea what is happening,” she said.

Some students take their love of the baseball team even further.

“I have a couple of students who are huge fans, they will tell you every score. For some it is bridging home and school and for others it’s about what is going on in the world,” said Guiliani.

Previous classes have followed the progress of the Soo Greyhounds and Team Jacobs during their Olympic gold medal run.

Game 1 of the playoff series against the Texas Rangers is being played today at 3:30 p.m., the students will be watching Game 2 in class tomorrow, which begins at 12:20 p.m.
