ADSB to welcome two new senior leaders

The Algoma District School Board is pleased to welcome two new leaders to the Senior Administrative Team following a secondment and an upcoming retirement.  

Asima Vezina, current Superintendent of Education, will be starting a secondment with the Leadership & Implementation Branch of the Ministry of Education in October. 

The secondment, potentially for three years, will see Vezina working in the Northeastern Region to provide program development support to a number of key Ministry initiatives.  

ADSB staff is looking forward to continuing to work with Superintendent Vezina in her new role. 

Her experience and leadership will undoubtedly be an asset to the Ministry’s team. 

Replacing Superintendent Vezina during her time away and in an acting Superintendent capacity will be Marcy Bell.  

Marcy Bell is currently the Principal at Central Algoma Secondary School where she has been the Principal since 2005.

She brings experience as a 9-12 and 7-12 principal and was instrumental in Central Algoma's consultation process and transition to a JK-6 and 7-12 system.

She has been involved in several system leadership projects including the ADSB’s Instructional Rounds Board Leadership Team and Safe Schools Principal Steering Committee.

She has also led the Board in policy and procedures work to support system operations.

Mrs. Bell holds a Master of Education Degree (Educational Administration) from Charles Sturt University, a Bachelor of Education from Nipissing University and a Bachelor of Science from Laurentian University.

Throughout her time as a Principal, Mrs. Bell has been dedicated to supporting the well-being of students, working collaboratively with students, parents, school teams and community partners to promote student success.

Kime Collver, current Superintendent of Education, will be retiring in December after 10 years in her current position. 

Prior to her Superintendent role, Mrs. Collver was a Principal, Vice-principal and classroom teacher. 

Her current portfolio includes Special Education, Aboriginal initiatives responsibilities for Family of Schools White Pines, W.C. Eaket and Elliot Lake Secondary School.

Superintendent Collver has been an extraordinary advocate for students with Special Education needs. 

Thanks to her dedicated work to support and build positive relationships with First Nation, Métis and Inuit partners, the ADSB has been recognized provincially for its work in this area. 

Mrs. Collver’s caring and passionate demeanour will certainly be missed. 

Replacing Superintendent Collver will be Brent Vallee.    

Brent Vallee has worked for eleven years as a principal and vice-principal at Tarentorus, River View and Greenwood Public Schools, as well as spending nine years as a classroom teacher. 

He is currently the principal at Queen Elizabeth Public School. 

Mr. Vallee holds a Master of Education degree from Nipissing University, a Bachelor of Education from Brock University and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wilfrid Laurier University in addition to completing specialist qualifications in Special Education, Primary Education, and Dramatic Arts. 

He has also been involved in a number of regional and provincial initiatives, including the Board Leadership Development Strategy and the Schools on the Move: Lighthouse program. 

Mr. Vallee has also presented workshops on a wide range of topics as well as serving as an instructor for the Principal’s Qualification Program.

Director of Education, Lucia Reece, noted that change is always a happy and a sad time, stating that:

“While we are always sad to bid farewell – even for a short time – to one of our colleagues, we do, as a teaching-learning organization, embrace the opportunity to support and grow new leaders to sustain the important work we do. We are very fortunate to have leaders in our system who have the courage and desire to challenge themselves in a new level of leadership.”
