The Department of English and Film at Algoma University is pleased to announce that Lieutenant Governor Award winner Dr. Gary Geddes will be giving a public reading on Thursday, September 24 at 7 p.m. in the Doc Brown Lounge, titled “Flying Beneath the Radar: How Poetry Makes Things Happen: A Reading and Talk by Gary Geddes”.

Dr. Gary Geddes is a prominent Canadian writer and poet.

Geddes has written and edited more than 40 books of poetry, fiction, nonfiction, drama, criticism, translation, and anthologies, and won a dozen national and international literary awards, including the Commonwealth Poetry Prize (Americas Region), the Lieutenant Governor's Award for Literary Excellence, and the Gabriela Mistral Prize from Chile.

When not serving as Distinguished Professor at Western Washington University or Visiting Writer at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, he resides on Thetis Island, British Columbia, with his wife and fellow author, Ann Eriksson.

Geddes earned his Bachelor of Arts in English and Philosophy from the University of British Columbia, and his Master of Arts and Ph.D. in English from the University of Toronto.

Geddes’s current project is a book length study of the federal policy of segregated health care entitled Medicine Unbundled: The Legacy of Canada’s Segregated Indian Hospitals and he will be pursuing this project as a visiting researcher in the Shingwauk Residential Schools Centre (SRSC) during his time at Algoma U.

He is keen to meet anyone in the Algoma region with experience of the so-called “Indian hospitals.”

Please contact Assistant Professor Dr. Alice Ridout in the Department of English and Film at [email protected] if you would like to meet with Geddes to discuss his project.

Geddes will speak about this project at his reading on Thursday, September 24.

Geddes will also take part in a second public event on campus on Tuesday, September 29th in the Great West Life Amphitheatre at 10 a.m.

Geddes, along with Assistant Professor in the Department of Law and Politics, Dr. Trevor Tchir, as well as Assistant Professor Andrea Pinheiro in the Department of Fine Arts and Music, will explore “Creative Practice and Political Activism” in a public conversation.

Both events are free of charge and open to the public.

Geddes will also be leading two classes at Algoma U to inspire and instruct students currently enrolled in the English program.

He will be attending the University’s “The Writer’s Voice” and “Introduction to Creative Writing” courses.

Geddes’ public reading and conversation are funded by the Canada Council and Playwrights Guild of Canada.
