UPDATE: Arauco has issued the following statement:

In the early hours of September 21, a fire in the pressing area of the MDF mill was reported to the local Fire Department.

The fire was brought under control and there were no resulting injuries.

All fire systems worked as planned to contain the fire.

Assessment of the incident is underway by the fire authorities and repairs that will need to be made to the facility.

Original story:

Firefighters are still on the scene of an overnight fire at the Arauco site — formerly know as Flakeboard — says a fire platoon chief.

Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services attended the scene shortly after midnight due to a fire at the facility, said Platoon Chief Mike Simon.

The fire is now out, but a crew is staying behind on standby and inspectors are on the scene, said Simon.

“There’s a fairly high dollar loss,” said Simon.

He added the Fire Marshall is on-route.
