Arrested for a cause

Michael Gagnon was seriously ready to get down to business following his ‘arrest’ Thursday morning during the Big Brothers Big Sisters Big Bailout event at the Bondar Pavilion.

Facing a number of charges submitted by his coworkers, the case worker and mentoring coordinator for Big Brothers, Big Sisters Sault Ste. Marie had the foresight to begin collecting pledges to finance his bail prior to the event.

The first-time event for the not-for-profit organization also had ‘jails’ set up at the Essar Centre and Quattro Suites and Conference Centre throughout the day.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Sault Ste. Marie Executive Director Rebecca Bolton told SooToday that each participant arrested thus far had either reached or exceeded their $1,000 bail benchmark.

“The more money that we raise, the more opportunities we’re able to offer the youth in our program,” she said.

Funds raised during Thursday’s event will go to support a program being developed in cooperation with Fit Bodies Fit Minds to encourage healthy lifestyle choices in youth.

“Anything that we offer outside of our traditional one-to-one match requires additional funding, that’s why this is important,” Bolton said. “Our community youth, we want them invested and to reach their full potential.”
