The first boat across the finish line in the 2015 Trans Superior International Yacht Race is Il Mostro, a 70-foot Volvo 70 owned and skippered by Peter Thornton from Chicago Yacht Club.

Il Mostro (the largest yacht shown in this photograph taken early in the race on Saturday), arrived in Duluth at 3:25 a.m. Monday, a little more than 38 hours after leaving Gros Cap.

Il Mostro is part of a new wave of  technical sailing craft.

It sailed for Puma in the 2008-9 Volvo Ocean Race.

On Saturday, 29 other yachts started the 338-nautical-mile race down the length of Lake Superior.

One boat, Copasetic from Duluth, is listed as retiring from the race before reaching the Keweenaw Peninsula.

Still on the lake, a three-boat cluster is well ahead of the rest of the pack: Denali from Racine Yacht Club, Stripes from Bayview Yacht Club and Talisman from Little Traverse Yacht Club, were all still approaching the Apostle Islands as Il Mostro entered Duluth.
