On Wednesday, July 1, while many people in the city were enjoying Canada Day barbeques or the festivities at the Roberta Bondar Pavilion some of you might have been participating in the 4th Annual John Rowswell Hub Trail Festival.

This event is a free, family event that encourages everyone to Walk, Ride or Roll your way along the Hub Trail from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Children’s “Jumpstart” Bicycle Rodeo was just one of fourteen passport stations along the trail. Children ages 2 to 12 were encouraged to show off their riding skills in an obstacle course challenge.

Children who took part in the Bicycle Rodeo could enter their names into a draw for a chance to win a bicycle courtesy of Jumpstart.

Well one lucky little girl Emma Houghton, age 8 did win.

Emma won a Supercycle Doodle Bike.

The Doodle bike comes with markers that allow you to personalize it.

Since the bike was too small for her, Emma and her mother Barbara Finch called Todd Black, General Manger of the Canadian Tire store in Sault Ste. Marie to see about exchanging it.

Before the bike exchange could take place, Ms. Finch called Mr. Black back to say they wouldn’t be coming in after all.

It seems that Emma had been thinking, since she already had a bike and a lot of kids didn’t have one or couldn’t afford one, she wanted to donate her prize.

The Doodle Bike has since been passed on to Algoma Family Services.

“I was very impressed with the little girl”, said Black “that’s pretty mature thinking for a little girl who just won a prize!”

We think so too! It’s something that deserves recognition so we would like to acknowledge Emma’s act of kindness by naming her the “Hero of the Hub Trail Festival 2015”.

This small act has probably brought more happiness to whoever receives the bike than Emma can ever imagine.

It might even begin a ripple effect of kindness, wouldn’t that be incredible.
