SAULT STE. MARIE - The deadline to join the NDP in order to vote in the upcoming nomination race looms at the end of the Victoria Day weekend.

New members must join the party by Sunday, May 17 in order to vote at the nomination meeting on June 16, as supporters must be members for 30 days prior to the meeting in order to be eligible to vote.

The vote will determine who will represent the NDP in the upcoming federal election against Conservative, Bryan Hayes.

The vote will take place 7 p.m. at the Delta Waterfront Hotel in the Brule Room.

Prospective members can join easily online at ndp.ca.

Since announcing her candidacy on Monday, nomination contender Peggy Lauzon has received strong endorsements from both long-time party activists and locals new to the NDP.

Dr. Gayle Broad, former President of the Ontario NDP, announced her support for Peggy, stating: "Peggy has worked with small, locally owned businesses, individuals and communities to build and strengthen local economies, and has generously given her time, energy and resources as a volunteer to numerous community groups and organizations. I know her most as an educator and mentor to many in our community, especially students and women, whom she has supported in realizing their potential. Peggy will be not only a strong candidate for the NDP, but an outstanding MP as well.”

Lauzon has already attracted numerous new supporters to her campaign, including many of the entrepreneurs she has worked with throughout her career.

“I can rely on Peggy, as someone who knows the struggles of running a small business while raising a family,“ said local small business owner, Kelly Burton. “I know she’ll be an amazing representative. She’s articulate, she transcends all the factions in our community and is continually bringing people together to make this a better place. She’s the perfect balance between business and social justice.”

Krisha Berg, Registered Nurse and President at Superior Sleep Center Inc. also spoke out in support.

“I have known Peggy Lauzon over 20 years, and throughout her life and career, she has demonstrated resilience and persistence.” Berg continued, “She has an amazing work ethic, attitude, and determination. I’m so confident the people of Sault Ste. Marie will benefit and be well served by Peggy Lauzon.”

Responding to the support, Lauzon said, “both long-time New Democrats and people completely new to politics or the NDP know me to be a strong leader, a good listener and an effective advocate. I have the experience and perseverance to invigorate and expand our base so that we can win in Sault Ste. Marie.”
