Ontario Investing in Elevator Replacements at two locations

The Group Health Centre is receiving $500,000 in capital funding from the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care, announced David Orazietti, MPP.

The funding is earmarked to support the replacement of an outdated elevator at the 240 McNabb St. location and the construction of a new elevator at the recently constructed 773 Great Northern Road site.

“Eighty per cent of people living in the Sault Ste. Marie and Algoma area visit the Group Health Centre, which has provided services to our community for over 50 years,” said Orazietti. “These much-needed upgrades will allow the Group Health Centre to continue to serve our community for many more years.”

The Group Health Centre provides an integrated model of services to the Sault Ste. Marie community, and houses family and specialist physicians, interdisciplinary health providers, and diagnostic and hospital services.

“The Group Health Centre is very appreciative of the support we receive from the Ministry of Health and the Government of Ontario,” said Dr. Brian Mitchell, Board Chair, Group Health Association.  “This investment will allow us to continue to deliver care in accessible locations for our patients.”

Investing in infrastructure is part of the government's economic plan for Ontario. The four-part plan is building Ontario up by investing in people's talents and skills, building new public infrastructure like roads and transit, creating a dynamic, supportive environment where business thrives and building a secure savings plan so everyone can afford to retire.

Some provincial investments since 2003 at Group Health Centre include:

  • $1.6 million to expand Group Health Centre Willow Avenue site
  • $744,000 for Group Health Centre Vascular Intervention Program (VIP)
  • $550,000 for clinical learning centre
  • $216,000 annual funding for Group Health Centre/SAH Cardiac Rehabilitation Program
