The Sault's new leash-free dog park on Second Line will be known as Strathclair Dog Park.

The name, agreed to by the Legal Off Leash Dog Owners Group of Sault Ste. Marie (LOLDOGS) and the city's parks and recreation advisory committee, is expected to receive approval from City Council at its May 25 meeting.

An official opening of the facility is planned for Thursday, June 4.

The dog owners originally proposed that the park be named Sinclair Dog Park, recognizing the family that generously donated the land that is now Strathclair Field.

The group was asked to reconsider this request to avoid confusion between the similar-sounding names.

The new name was approved at tonight's meeting of the parks and recreation advisory committee.

The off-leash park is located on Second Line between the Humane Society and Strathclair Field.

Other news from tonight's meeting

  • The launch of a Hub Trail web portal, originally planned for April 22, has been delayed because of technical issues. The portal will be hosted on the City of Sault Ste. Marie's website. Prepared through a partnership with NORDIK Institute, it will feature information about the historical, cultural and environmental ecosystems adjacent to the popular 25-kilometre trail. NORDIK has not advised the city when it will deliver the completed project.
  • Eight pieces of static outdoor exercise equipment destined for Clergue Park have arrived in the city. Installation could take place as early as next month, once final design issues have been decided.
  • Extensive information on the city's 74 parks has been added to the municipal website. The parks can be searched by features such as playrgounds and tennis courts. The added information includes Google photo spheres by Steven Veldt.
