Suspicious fire at former Plummer site (4 photos)

Firefighters with the Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services responded to multiple 911 calls of open flames Wednesday afternoon at the construction site for Riverwalk Condominiums.

Firefighters with the Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services responded to multiple 911 calls of open flames Wednesday afternoon at the construction site for Riverwalk Condominiums.

When firefighters attended the scene they found a large trash container burning.

It contained demolition rubbish, including wood.

Quick thinking from a fire prevention officer on-scene may have helped prevent the fire spreading to one of the former Plummer hospital buildings.

“He had enough insight to get the bulldozer driver to drag it away from the wall,” said a spokesperson for Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services.

He also said a police investigation is now underway to determine the cause of the fire, which has been deemed suspicious.
