A valuable lesson in supporting children through troubled times.

To celebrate Children’s Mental Health Week, renowned writer and researcher Dr. Michael Ungar will be in Sault Ste. Marie as the keynote speaker of the 2015 Triple P Ontario Conference.

On May 5, 2015, Algoma Family Services Foundation and Sault Ste. Marie Best for Kids will host Dr. Ungar at The Delta Sault Ste. Marie Waterfront Hotel.

The event is FREE of charge and open to all members of the public.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with the presentation beginning at 7 p.m., light refreshments will be served.

Dr. Ungar is among the best known writers and researchers on the topic of resilience in the world.

As both a family therapist and very successful scientist, he has identified the most important factors that influence the resilience of children, youth and families.

He is the author of 14 books that have been translated into five languages, numerous manuals for parents, educators, and employers, as well as more than 125 scientific papers.

In another of his many roles, Dr. Ungar is the founder and co-director of the Resilience Research Centre at Dalhousie University where he coordinates millions of dollars in research in more than a dozen countries.

That work has inspired many of Dr. Ungar’s books and articles for mental health professionals and researchers, including Working with Children and Youth with Complex Needs: 20 Skills to Build Resilience, and The Social Ecology of Resilience, which is among the most popular texts on resilience in the world.

Dr. Ungar also regularly consults with organizations like the World Bank, UNESCO, the Red Cross and many other government and non-governmental organizations in Canada and overseas.

Children’s Mental Health Week will be celebrated across Ontario from May 3 - 9, 2015.

During this week, Triple P encourages Canadian parents to learn more about the positive influence parenting can have on their child’s mental health.

Triple P programs have been integrated into existing services at many child, youth and family agencies, health units, Best Start Hubs, child care centres, child protection agencies and schools in Algoma.
