NEWS RELEASE

HURON-SUPERIOR CATHOLIC DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD

*************************
The St. Basil Alumni Association (SBAA) in conjunction with the Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board (HSCDSB) is hosting an alumni celebration on Saturday, May 16, 2015.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the spirit of St. Basil Secondary and its many accomplishments. Alumni will be able to share their memories of the school with loved ones and catch up with former classmates and staff,” said St. Basil Secondary Principal, Cindy Sawyer.

"St. Basil represents so many different things to all of us that were fortunate enough to pass through its doors. To me, St. Basil didn't represent a school; it represented a family. The memories made, the friendships built and the values instilled in us as part of the Saints Family are invaluable gifts that will keep the St. Basil spirit alive," said organizing committee member Terri Chiarello, Class of 2002.

"The lessons I took with me from my time at St. Basil go beyond anything a student can learn from sitting in a classroom. Our teachers modeled for us what a Catholic community is all about by celebrating God at the center of all we accomplished academically, athletically and socially. The spirit of St. Basil will forever live on as SBSS grads continue to teach, build and serve for others," said Mario Rocchetta, Class of 2002.

The day will begin with a Mass at 10 a.m. presided over by Fr. Francis Ezenezi from St. Gerard Majella parish.

“Over the past 24 years, students and staff of St. Basil Secondary have gathered each month in our gym to celebrate our faith in school wide liturgies. It is rather fitting as we say good-bye to our beloved school that we begin the Remembering St. Basil celebration at 10 a.m. by gathering once more in our gym to celebrate our faith and the gift that St. Basil Secondary School was in our lives,” said former Chaplaincy Leader, Mary Anne Amadio.

Mass will be followed by a variety of activities during an open house from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.

They will include ‘walk down memory lane’ tours, a family barbeque, a show by illusionist and SBSS alum Ryan McFarling and much more.

“St. Basil Secondary is revered by thousands of current and former students and staff. During its 24 years it has provided a strong faith-based education for our students. It also produced a large number of esteemed alumni who are now contributing as adults to the fabric of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada and beyond. We are proud to a part of this celebration,” said HSCDSB Director of Education, John Stadnyk.

There are two ways current and former staff and students can get updates on the alumni weekend.
