Work continues on a washout in Gros Cap which has threatened the city’s main water intake.

Crews continue to work on replacing a compromised culvert, at which time PUC will be able to inspect the water main pipe that runs below the highway.

“There’s still a lot of work to do,” said PUC spokesperson Giordan Zin.

PUC is taking an observer role as the work is completed on behalf of the Ministry of Transportation (MTO).

Carole Paiement, communications services coordinator for MTO, notes the highway is currently open to one lane as of Monday afternoon.

“The work is ongoing 24 hours a day until the road way is returned to two lanes of traffic and any potential risk to the water system is eliminated,” she adds.

Assuming the water main isn’t compromised, Paiement expects the highway to be restored to two lanes by Wednesday and repaving of that section to occur within “the following weeks.”

Zin said as of this time there is nothing to indicate there is a problem with the main.
