*************************

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) - Sault Ste. Marie District is advising area residents that a Flood Warning is in effect for the Goulais River.

Residents of the Goulais River Area should be aware that flooding is occurring due to ice jams and water levels may change very quickly.

Residents should take necessary actions to protect property and monitor developing conditions closely.

People are asked to stay away from fast moving rivers and streams.

MNRF is closely monitoring the weather and developing watershed conditions.

Further updates will be issued as appropriate.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION

Description of Weather System:

The recent warm weather has started to melt the area snow pack and increase flow and water levels in the Goulais River.

The weather forecasted for the next three days is for continued seasonal temperatures but temperatures are forecasted to drop beginning Wednesday.

Precipitation is forecasted for Sunday overnight and Monday and we can expect up to 20mm.

These temperatures will continue to melt the remaining snow pack, and precipitation will continue to increase water levels.

Description of Current Conditions

There is currently an ice jam in the lower section of the Goulais River which could cause rapid increase in water levels and localized flooding.

The Goulais River is continuing to break up with most sections of the river now being ice free.

The threat of continued ice jams is high on the river with ice flowing downstream and collecting at some locations.

A close watch on local forecasts and conditions is recommended.
