There’s usually no shortage of conversation as a class of students files into a school gymnasium.
Thursday at St. Mary’s French Immersion there was hardly a whisper.
A hush fell over parts of the east end school as dozens of students pledged to go silent for Free the Children’s We Are Silent campaign.
“There has been quite a bit of background teaching to get them to this point,” said Anick Champagne, the Grade 7-8 teacher who organized the fundraiser.
Dozens of students in Grades 6, 7, and 8 took part, raising $2,700 in the one-day event.
Money raised will go toward a water project for children in Kenya.
The fundraiser is in preparation for the first-ever You The Sault event scheduled to take place in May and follows a number of local projects the students have taken part in.
