A pasta take-out dinner fundraiser held Friday for the Sault 's Angela Campioni and her family exceeded the expectations of those who organized it.

The Delta Sault Ste. Marie Waterfront Hotel put the fundraiser together to support the Campioni family with their expenses as they stay in Ottawa, where Angela, 17, bravely carries on her fight against leukemia by awaiting a bone-marrow transplant.

Angela's mother, Celena, works in the Delta's housekeeping department.

"The people of Sault Ste. Marie should be proud of themselves…they're the ones that came down in droves (for take-out dinners) to support the Campionis," said Kevin Wyer, Delta general manager, speaking to SooToday.

Delta management officials were still tallying up how many takeouts were purchased and how much was raised in funds for the Campioni family as of Monday morning.

"It was definitely over 500 dinners (picked up at the Delta between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Friday)," Wyer said.

"The steelworkers dropped off $1,000 and said 'take 50 orders to the Soup Kitchen,'  earlier in the day, a couple of people did that, the mayor's office did something similar, so if you include those it's close to 600 dinners (1,200 people served, at $20 per takeout order)," Wyer said.

All proceeds will go to the Campioni family for travel expenses, food, accommodation and medications.

Angela's family (her father Dom, her mother Celena and two brothers) have been by her side in Ottawa providing love and support throughout the battle.

One of Angela's brothers (it has not been revealed which) will be the donor in the bone-marrow transplant procedure.
