There’s less than one week left to support the community’s bid for the 2017 Tim Hortons Brier by reserving a seat for the event.

To help bolster Sault Ste. Marie’s case to Curling Canada, citizens and businesses are being asked to make $50 deposits on tickets.

The deadline to reserve a seat is Tuesday, March 31.

The local bid committee consists of Tourism Sault Ste. Marie, the City of Sault Ste. Marie, Soo Curlers Association and Tarentorus Sports Club.

By making a $50 deposit, registrants are guaranteed a seat, as well as access to the legendary Brier Patch, should the community’s bid be successful.

To reserve a seat, or for more information, visit www.SSMBrier2017.com.

If the bid is unsuccessful, the deposit is 100 percent refundable.

“Throughout the past month, we’ve had a solid response from our community in terms of deposit sales. We’re close to where we want to be, but expectations have changed with the growing competition, and we still need more residents and businesses to show their support,” said Ian McMillan, Executive Director of Tourism Sault Ste. Marie, a division of the Economic Development Corporation.

St. John’s, Newfoundland is working on its own bid package for the 2017 Tim Hortons Brier, which also includes a ticket deposit drive.

Whichever city can sell the most deposits will certainly have a leg-up in the eyes of Curling Canada, the national organization that will evaluate the bid packages and award the event accordingly.

“It looks like it may very well be a heads-up race between Sault Ste. Marie and St. John’s,” said John Pucci, Manager of Sport Tourism and Event Management for Tourism Sault Ste. Marie. “Our community has a solid history of supporting major events like this, and I encourage folks to continue this trend by bolstering the Sault’s 2017 Brier bid by making a deposit on tickets. With just five days left before the deadline, time is of the essence. Let’s show the country what we can do.”
