'Somebody's been selected'

In strict legal terms, the city of Sault Ste. Marie does not yet have a new commissioner of finance and treasurer.

In strict legal terms, the city of Sault Ste. Marie does not yet have a new commissioner of finance and treasurer.

"Until council passes a bylaw we don't have a new treasurer," said Joe Fratesi, city chief administrative officer, speaking to SooToday Friday.

However, Fratesi said "somebody's been selected and somebody's been told they will be recommended for the position…but I'm not in the position to confirm anything because that's something that will go to council and it will be council's decision."

"It's my recommendation based on the selection committee's decision," Fratesi said.

"The selection committee, in fact, has done its work and is making a recommendation but it's something that needs to go to council and needs to be approved by bylaw and at that point we'll have a new treasurer."

The selection committee appointed to find a successor to retiring Commissioner of Finance and Treasurer Bill Freiburger included Fratesi, Mayor Christian Provenzano and Commissioner of Human Resources Peter Niro.

The committee was appointed by council at its February 9 meeting.

The recommended candidate's name will be included in city council's agenda package, which will be released March 6.

Council will vote whether or not to approve the recommended candidate at its March 9 meeting.

Fratesi confirmed the recommended candidate is an internal candidate.

Bill Freiburger, retiring commissioner of finance and treasurer, announced February 3 he will be retiring effective May 8, after 30 years of service with the city, 21 years as treasurer.
