Province Strengthening Supports for People with Developmental Disabilities

Community Living Algoma is receiving funding from the provincial government to promote inclusive employment and improve services and supports for people with developmental disabilities, announced David Orazietti MPP today.

“Our government is proud to support these innovative partnerships in Sault Ste. Marie that will lead to employment opportunities and promote a higher quality of life for people with developmental disabilities in our community,” said Orazietti. “Our government recognizes the importance of providing community-based support to individuals and their families who are living with disabilities.”

Community Living Algoma will receive $250,000 in funding from the new Developmental Services Employment and Modernization Fund for their “Transition – Sheltered to Community Connections” project.

Community Living Algoma will be transitioning away from its sheltered workshop program to focus on employment and participation in the community.

The agency will provide a continuum of employment services to individuals with developmental disabilities to assist them in becoming job ready and support them to connect with employment service providers.

They will also arrange workshops to give staff and families practical tools to facilitate community participation for individuals.

“We are very excited about our proposal through the Developmental Services Employment and Modernization Fund being approved by the Ministry of Community and Social Services. The funding allocation of $250,000 will be used over a two-year timeframe primarily to create opportunities for people with developmental disabilities. We are very thankful for this funding and express our appreciation to MPP David Orazietti and the provincial government for their ongoing support of the developmental services sector”, said John Policicchio, Executive Director with Community Living Algoma.

The fund is part of Ontario’s 2014 Budget commitment to invest $810 million over three years to build stronger services and supports for individuals with developmental disabilities.

Supporting people with developmental disabilities is part of Ontario’s plan to give everyone a chance to participate in the province’s economy and communities.

It is also part of the government's four-part plan to build Ontario up by investing in people's talents and skills, building new public infrastructure like roads and transit, creating a dynamic, supportive environment where business thrives, and building a secure savings plan so everyone can afford to retire.
