Triskaidekaphobia + love = disaster

Valentine's eve is Friday the 13th.

Coincidence? We think not!

In celebration/fear of this cosmic reminder of unlucky love, writer Mallika Viegas, one of our Village Media friends at NorthernLife.ca, compiled a list of her favourite cinematic examples of love gone wrong.

We thought SooToday readers might enjoy it as well.

Happy Valentine's Day!

1. Casablanca (1942) - Renowned as one of the classiest romances of all time, nothing cries jilted lover like forgetting to tell your new beau that you were married to a famous resistance hero, who had been presumed dead.

2. Titanic (1997) - This classic different-sides-of-the-track romance story with the perfect meet-cute onboard that magnificent ocean liner predictably ends in disaster. While the old lady at the end portrays living a wonderful, globetrotting, fulfilled life, we can't help getting hung up on the fact that her lifelong remorse must have been letting go, literally.

3. Edward Scissorhands (1990) - Yes, we may be able to see past exterior appearances and into Edward's beautiful artistic soul (read: Johnny Depp), but falling in love with a man who rips and chops up everything he touches may not have been the best idea.

4. Annie Hall (1977) - One of the funniest of Woody Allen's movies throws all hope of having a healthy relationship out the window. The film ends with Alvy's thoughts on love and relationships, which may not be the happy ending we were all cheering for. However, we can't really expect anything less from a Woody Allen ending.

5. Romeo & Juliet (1996) - The world-renowned star-crossed lovers, with feuding families, ultimate doomed romance, you know how it goes. And Leo Dicaprio.

6. Bonnie and Clyde (1967) - The legendary story of a couple who run riot in the South during the 1930s. Turns out being an on-the-run murderer and bank robber with your real life partner in crime isn't all it's cracked up to be.

7. Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith (2005) - Because, falling in love with Darth Vader can never end well.

8. Moulin Rouge! (2001) - Set in the City of Love, this movie contains no shortage of romantic spectacles, tormented anti-heroes and choreographed dance scenes (like all true love should). But it also contains untimely demises, and a reminder that life just isn't fair.

9. Gone with the Wind (1939) - The tumultuous love story between self-centered Southern belle Scarlett O'Hara and her hot-headed third husband Rhett Butler had us all cheering for their success, despite three hours of O'Hara's bratty behaviour. Ultimately however, Gable's famous line, "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn" says it all.

There you have it, the unluckiest loves to commemorate the unluckiest day as a prequel to Valentine's Day, because you might as well take today to contemplate your happily ever after.
