Local2 and Village Media are pleased to introduce a new music series to our growing catalogue of regular programs.

Bare, produced and edited by Sault filmmaker Dan Nystedt, throws a unique spotlight on local musical talent.

"There's nothing original in terms of the way it's being shot in a white background with a bunch of cameras set up. We see a lot of that," he explains. "But what I really wanted to do was do something different within that. I'm a big fan of when you come across clips online of kind of a unique take on a song."

Rather than pile all a band's members into the Local2 studio with a mountain of gear, Nystedt invites musicians to break their songs down into solo or duo performances.

"It's kind of forcing them out of their comfort zone, but the results have been outstanding," he said.

As co-owner of Tidal Records, Nystedt enlisted his label's artists for the first few episodes, including Shannon Moan and the Boothill Crooners.

The pilot episode features Frank Deresti and Jay Case of Frank Deresti and the Lake Effect.

SooToday caught a recent taping of Bare in studio with Steve Edwards and Michael Mikus of The Pixo Control.

"It's a really great thing that's happening here. I've seen shows that are kind of similar to it on YouTube, but nothing like it in Sault Ste. Marie so far," said Mikus of the filming experience. "I think music and art should have more attention here, so the fact that something's happening related to it is really great."

"I was really impressed with The Pixo Control," said Nystedt. "They were just a name that I kept hearing. I hadn't really seen them perform. When they came in, they did a really great job. And they're just really cool guys. I'm pretty excited for those kids."

In addition to showcasing local talent on Bare, Nystedt plans to host out-of-town touring acts on the program as well.

Bands and musicians wishing to take part in the series are encouraged to contact Nystedt via email at [email protected]
