Hundreds gathered on the front lawn of Algoma University last evening to celebrate the launch of its 50th anniversary with a fireworks display.

From its humble beginnings in 1965 as part of Cambrian College (now Sault College of Applied Arts and Technology), Algoma University has continued to expand and exceed expectations.

Last night's festivities included bonfires and skating on the new Algoma U rink located on the front lawn.

The celebration continues today with skating until 8 p.m., bonfires from 1 to 4 p.m., a hockey game at 2 p.m. on the Anna McCrea rink located behind the University, and an Algoma University history lecture in the Great West Life Amphitheatre at 4 p.m.

On Sunday, January 25, the women's Algoma Thunderbirds basketball team will take on the Nipissing Lakers at 1 p.m., followed by the men's game at 3 p.m.

Both games will take place in the newly renovated George Leach Centre.

As part of the year-long 50th anniversary celebration, the Algoma University Board of Governors has taken the opportunity to search for and appoint the University's very first Chancellor.

Nominations are currently being accepted and may be emailed to: [email protected] with 'Chancellor Nomination' as the subject line.

Nominations will be accepted until Monday, February 16, 2015.
