NEWS RELEASE

CANADIAN RED CROSS

*****************************
The Canadian Red Cross actively responded in ten (10) municipalities in Southern Ontario, including Toronto, as a result of a severe winter storm.

Canadian Red Cross provided or supported services at warming centres, reception centres and shelters that assisted over 1000 people.

Here in Sault Ste. Marie, the Canadian Red Cross Personal Disaster Assistance (PDA) Team assisted 54 individuals in 2013 and over 70 individuals in 2014.

Assistance was as a result of floods, fires and other personal disasters.

Disasters can have an affect on anyone in our community at anytime which was highlighted in the case of the Toronto Ice Storm.

Our local PDA team assists at no cost to the individual or family affected and assists in the form of food, clothing, shelter, and personal services.

Of course these services do come at a cost to the Canadian Red Cross.

It is mostly through the generous donations of Canadians that the Canadian Red Cross can continue to do this important work.

On January 21, 2015, the Canadian Red Cross will be holding a fundraiser to bring awareness and much needed funds to the local branch to help individuals and families displaced by personal disaster.

Shelter Shenanigans will see emergency responders and local celebrities put up at a local shelter located in the Sears court of the Station Mall.

Each “shelter resident” will be asked to raise approximately $300 – half the cost of assisting one adult for 3 days with food, clothing, shelter and personal services after a devastating loss such as a house fire.

These shelter residents will also be cared for in many similar ways individuals experience real life Red Cross shelters.

The Canadian Red Cross is asking the community to support this fundraiser by stopping by the Station Mall at the Red Cross “shelter” on January 21 in the Sears Court, between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. to make a donation, or call the local office at 705-759-4547 and make a donation over the phone.

This program could assist you and your family one day or someone you care about.

For more information about the Disaster Management Program and how you can help please visit www.redcross.ca or call our local office at 705-759-4547.
