Traffic stop leads to $80,000 drug seizure

BRUCE MINES – Members of the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), East Algoma Crime Unit with the members from Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau (OCEB) Sudbury Drug Enforcement Unit, North East Region Canine and North East Region Emergency Response Team have charged several individuals with several offences.

The charges stem from a traffic stop on December 18, 2014 on Highway 17 in Plummer Additional Township suspected of illegal drug related activities in the East Algoma area.

It culminated with the execution of a Controlled Drugs and Substances Act Search warrant at a residence on Cunningham Street in Bruce Mines.

Seized as a result of the traffic stop and the subsequent search warrant were cocaine with an approximate street value of $39,000, cannabis oil $820, cannabis resin $3,000, marijuana $34,500, money and drug paraphernalia.

The total estimated street value of the drug seized is approximately $80,000.

Charged are:

Daniel Archie LAPLANTE, 53, Blind River – scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on February 5, 2015

  • Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of Trafficking – Cocaine as per s.5 (2) of the Controlled Drug and Substance Act (CDSA) ; and with
  • Possession of a Schedule II substance- Cannabis Marihuana - under 30grams as per s. 4(1) of the CDSA.

Daniel Joseph LAPLANTE, 34, Blind River – scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on February 5, 2015

·         Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of Trafficking – Cocaine as per s.5 (2) of the CDSA.

Allan Robert STOBIE, 45, Bruce Mines – held for bail hearing on the following:

  • Possession Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000 as per s. 354(1)(a) of the Criminal Code – Canada (CC) x 2;
  • Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of Trafficking – Cocaine as per s. 5(2) of the CDSA;
  • Possession of a Schedule II substance for the purpose of Trafficking -over 3 kg as per s. 5(2) of the CDSA; and with
  • Possession of a Schedule II substance for the purpose of Trafficking- under 3 kg as per s. 5(2) of the CDSA x 2

In addition, a 46-year-old female of Bruce Mines and a 47-year-old man of Sault Ste-Marie were also arrested and later released. 

Investigation is ongoing.
