The Governments of Canada and Ontario are working to end homelessness by delivering more than $4.5 million in affordable housing funding, over five years, to low and moderate income households in Sault Ste. Marie, announced David Orazietti, MPP and Bryan Hayes, MP.

“Our government has partnered with the federal government and municipalities to invest in programs that help reduce poverty in Ontario and support low-income families,” said David Orazietti, MPP. “This funding gives communities like Sault Ste. Marie theflexibility to address local housing priorities and better meet the needs of individuals and families who need safe, suitable and affordable housing.”

The District of Sault Ste. Marie Social Services Administration Board (DSSAB) will receive a $4,593,900 total investment, cost-shared between the governments of Canada and Ontario, which supports the construction of affordable rental housing units, repairs and improvements to existing units, and rental and down-payment assistance to people in need. This funding will provide the DSSAB with the flexibility to design and deliver affordable housing programs that address local housing needs.

“I am extremely pleased that the Federal Government has partnered with the Province in the Investment in Affordable Housing Program in Sault Ste Marie,” said Bryan Hayes, MP. “I am confident the DSSAB will do a great job administering the program in another great example of all levels of government working together to the benefit of those most in need.”

Since 2003, the Ontario government and the Federal government have committed more than $4 billion to affordable housing initiatives, representing the largest affordable housing investment in the province’s history, helping over 385,000 households.

"Affordable housing is an important issue in Sault Ste. Marie and these funds will certainly help our community improve access to affordable housing," said Mayor Christian Provenzano.  "I thank our Federal and Provincial partners for their support and David and Bryan for their work. I look forward to working with both of them to continue to improve our community."

Supporting affordable housing is part of the government’s economic plan for Ontario. The four-part plan is building Ontario up by investing in people’s talents and skills, building new public infrastructure like roads and transit, creating a dynamic, supportive environment where business thrives, and building a secure savings plan so everyone can afford to retire.

“The District of Sault Ste. Marie Social Services Administrative Board looks forward to working with the Province on its Long term Affordable Housing Strategy and this provincial funding will go a long way in addressing affordable housing for low –to-moderate income persons with disabilities, seniors, families and individuals,” said Jeff Barban, Manager of Housing Programs Division, City of Sault Ste. Marie.  “It will be a welcome support as well to the implementation of the District of Sault Ste. Marie Social Services Administrative Boards Ten Year Housing and Homelessness plan.”
