MINISTRY OF NATURAL RESOURCES

***************************
Three Toronto-area men have been fined a total of $3,900 for possessing an over-limit of pink salmon.

Serghei Baciu pleaded guilty to possessing ten pink salmon and was fined $1,000.

Denis Olarescu pleaded guilty to possessing 12 pink salmon and was fined $1,400.

Sergiu Mirza pleaded guilty to possessing nine pink salmon and was fined $1,500.

Mirza’s fine was higher as a result of prior fishing offences.

All the fish were permanently forfeited to the Crown.

Fishing equipment that was seized will be returned once the fines are paid.

Court heard that on September 13, 2014, conservation officers, with the assistance of the Ontario Provincial Police, inspected a vehicle in the town of Massey.

Within the vehicle were three anglers who had been fishing earlier that morning on the Mississagi River just west of Blind River.

The anglers were in possession of 31 freshly caught pink salmon.

The legal limit for pink salmon in the Blind River area is only five per person.

Justice of the Peace Darlene Hayden heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Espanola, on December 11, 2014.
