The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service is pleased to participate in Crime Prevention Week in Ontario.

The Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police, as well as the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services, believes that crime can be reduced by working with our citizens to make our communities safer places to live.

Between November 2 to 8 the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service will provide daily crime prevention information to our citizens.

TRAVEL TIPS

As Canadians we like to travel to warmer climates during the winter months. Planning for a vacation can be exciting as well as overwhelming.

Here are a few steps to make your trip and the return a little more enjoyable:

-Make sure you have arranged to have a trusted friend or family member look after the house while you are away.  This includes daily checks.

-Consider shutting off the main water valve in the house

-Have a neighbour put out some of their garbage at the end of your driveway so it looks like someone is home

-Have a neighbour park in your driveway

-Ensure a neighbour or family member knows where you will be staying and leave a number where you can be reached in an emergency

-Cancel your newspaper and put your mail on hold

-Check to see if there is a travel advisory for the area you are going to

-If travelling in a foreign country, make sure you have the required vaccinations before leaving

-Ensure you take enough of your medication.  Allow for a few extra days worth in the event you get delayed at the airport

-Make two copies of the front and back of all the credit cards and identification papers you are travelling with.  Leave one copy with a trusted person and secure the second copy in your room safe

-Don’t become a victim of crime in another destination. Practice personal safety tips when travelling

By following a few of these steps you can reduce your chance of being a victim of crime at home and while abroad.
