Not a random act of violence, say police

Although city police have been investigating a downtown shooting for over a week with no arrests, they say that they know who they are looking for.

“The persons we have identified thus far are all known to us and and are all aquatinted to one another,” said Inspector Sean Sparling of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service.

He added, “This is not a random act of violence.”

Asked why suspect names have not been released, Sparling replied, “We don’t release suspect information, only once someone is charged.”

“This is still an open investigation,” said Sparling.

The shooting investigation began on Wednesday October 22 after a man was apparently shot at 28 Wellington Street East, near Gore Street.

Police are looking into the possibility of related crimes in the area by the same suspects, at least one of which involved a firearm.

“We are certainly aware there were two home invasion events that were in the proximity of where this shooting happened and in the same timeframe. One involved a firearm and we are actively investigating a connection between these two events,” he said.

Sparling added, “It’s going to be a lengthy investigation.”
