NEWS RELEASE

SAULT STE. MARIE AND DISTRICT LEARNING DISABILITIES ASSOCIATION

*************************
This is a very exciting time for the Sault Ste. Marie & District Learning Disabilities Association lead by the Community Advisory Committee!

The Ontario Trillium Foundation recently announced a grant to the Learning Disabilities Association of Sudbury as the lead organization on a collaborative project to support more than 4876 students with learning disabilities across northeastern Ontario.

The funding approval for $50,000 over a one year period is to provide seed funding to implement the business plan and develop the Northern Ontario Centre for Learning Differences, a support network for groups that work with individuals, particularly children and youth with learning disabilities.

Kids with learning disabilities across Algoma, Manitoulin, and Sudbury districts will benefit directly from this project with support and advocacy based on a coordinated service delivery model.

Funding is also included to develop new partnerships and a support network for students in the Timmins – Cochrane area.

In addition to this wonderful news, the Ontario Ministry of Education has provided $5,000 to the Sault Ste. Marie Learning Disabilities Associationthrough its Parent Reaching Out Grant.

This will provide funding to support students with learning disabilities and their families through new and self advocacy workshops to be held in the Sault Ste. Marie area over the next year.

October is Learning Disabilities Awareness Month and the Sault Ste. Marie Learning Disabilities Association is very pleased to announce that Olympic Champions Brad Jacobs and Mac Marcoux have agreed to be our Honourary Co-Chairs for the events planned this month.

“It is a very exciting time for our Sault Ste. Marie Learning Disabilities Association as we continue to support kids and youth with learning disabilities in our community,” says Matt Trainor, Chair of the Sault Ste. Marie Community Advisory Committee.  “Brad and Mac have both accomplished what so many kids dream of and they are outstanding role models that have demonstrated that with hard work and dedication you can achieve your goals and overcome obstacles.  On behalf of our committee, I’d like to thank Brad and Mac for their support.”
